Special Forces officer James Belmont and his combat dog Odin crawl out of a plane crash into the Alaskan wilderness, and the fight to survive the elements never lets up. Director David Ayer keeps it taut and physical, with Brad Pitt anchoring a brutal, stripped-down ordeal. It lands at 85% on Rotten Tomatoes and 7.5 on IMDb, and the scale of that wilderness belongs on a big screen.

Georgia Oakley's take on Sense and Sensibility, with Daisy Edgar-Jones and Caitriona Balfe, is a swooning drama about sisterhood and the brave, foolish ways we fall in love. At 79% on Rotten Tomatoes and 7.2 on IMDb, it is the easy yes for a romantic evening you will keep talking about over dessert.
